Djadidism in Ottoman Mekteps

The objective of this article is to study the "Djadidist" movement, which was in fact a reformation of the Ottoman education system. Firstly an analysis of the methodology of "usul-i cedit" which was promoted by some Ottoman pedagogues, especially by Selim Sabit and applied oficially in the Ottoman mekteps in mid 19th century is analised. The application of "usul-i cedit" by the Turks in the Russian Empire is also examined.
