Ottoman-Iran Relations from Tanzimat to World War I

Gökhan Çetinsaya

This study seeks to explore the nature of Ottoman-Iranian relations from the Tanzimat to World War I. It attempts to trace the continuities and changes in Ottoman foreign policy towards Iran. It argues that Ottoman-Iranian relations had historical, geographic, strategic and cultural dimensions. It mainly deals with four issues: Iranian threat; boundary problems; Ottoman influence on the political and religious elites of Iran; the growing Shi'ite influence in Iraq.

Key words: Ottoman Empire, Iran, Persia, Tanzimat, Abdülhamid II.
