‘Rooster’ Iconography in Turko-Islamic Art
Turgay Yazar - Abdulkadir Dündar
The rooster figure has an important place in Turkish and Islamic iconogography. The beliefs in pre Islamic Turkish culture about the rooster which was one of the animals sacrificed to the sky and earth gods and to the ancestors, were related to shamanism. In burial and tomb cults it signifies eternity and life after death; in addition to its role as protector it symbolizes the bird of sky on the universal axis. The rooster is also important in Islamic culture. In many hadiths an angel in the form of a rooster is mentioned, who is the friend of the prophet and the protector of its owner and his house. The significance attributed to the rooster in Islamic culture has made it possible for the old Turkish beliefs related to it to survive to the present day.
