1848-1849 Hungarian Struggle for Independence and Ottoman-Hungarian Solidarity

The years 1998 and 1999 are very important for Hungarians, as it is the 150th anniversary of their struggle for freedom and independence. The Hungarian nation, who were under the rule of the Habsburg Empire, revolted on the morning of 15 March 1848. Upon the invitation of the Habsburg Empire, the Tsarist Russian Armies attacked the Hungarians and the crushed the freedom struggle. The Ottoman State reacted strongly to the Russian intervention. Lajos Kossuth and thousands of Hungarians took refuge in the Ottoman State. Sultan Abdülmecid refused to turn over the freedom fighters resided in Kütahya. Later, Kossuth went to the United States then Italy. There incidents have empowered the Turkish - Hungarian friendship.
